Wells College is a private coeducational liberal arts college located in Aurora, which is a college town in Cayuga County, in the US state of New York, with a small population of 720 inhabitants, at the time of the 2000 census estimate, of which over 400 were college students.
Wells was established in 1868 and it is part of the Aurora Village-Wells College Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It initially started as an all-women's institution, and became co-ed in 2005. It offers its students majors, minors and concentrations in a wide range of study areas, which include psychology, sociology and anthropology, dance, American cultures, art, plus many other.
Wells' athletic teams are known as the Wells Express, and they compete in NCAA Division III, in various sports for men and women.
Among Wells College's noteworthy graduates, there are also: Frances Cleveland - First Lady of the United States and wife of President Grover Cleveland, Pleasant Rowland - founder of Pleasant Company and creator of the American Girl brand of dolls, books, and accessories, and Edith Kinney Gaylord - journalist, philanthropist, founder of Inasmuch Foundation and Ethics and Excellence in Journalism Foundation, and former president of the National Women's Press Club.
